Woods wins seventh Farmers Insurance Open title

61st Farmers Insurance Open
January 24-28, 2013
Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Jolla, Calif.

Winner: Tiger Woods
Score: 274 (-14)
Prize: $1,098,000

Woods is now only seven wins behind Sam Snead’s all-time record of 82 PGA tournament victories.

Tiger Woods cruised to his seventh Farmers Insurance Open victory Monday, carding a final round 72 to finish with a 14-under 274 in the fourth tournament of this year’s PGA Tour schedule. Woods was barely challenged by the remainder of the field after taking the lead following second-round play on Friday. The only thing that briefly hampered Woods’ bid for victory was a fogged-in Torrey Pines that suspended play on Saturday and forced the event to conclude Monday.

Woods led by as many as eight shots on the back nine Monday before making matters interesting with two bogeys and one double bogey over his final five holes. He did manage to hang on, however, to top defending champion Brandt Snedeker by four strokes, with Snedeker finishing in a second-place tie with Josh Teater. Last year’s champ shared a first-round lead with K.J. Choi after both carded a 7-under 65 on Thursday. Woods matched that 65 on Friday to take the lead and never look back, with a 78 in a third round that was split over Sunday and Monday. He has won 50 of 55 PGA Tour events in which he has either led or been tied after 54 holes.

The Farmers Insurance Open win was the 75th victory of Woods’ career. He is No. 2 all time in PGA Tour victories, second only to Sam Snead‘s 82 tour wins.
